Why does Polytaipe look deliberately plain?

Polytaipe ships one tuned look, ink and paper plus a single functional hue, because how a practice line is presented measurably affects how quickly you perceive its letters. Stray color competes for attention, clutter increases crowding, and inconsistent fonts slow letter recognition. We chose plain on purpose. The research is below.

Color means one thing

A single out-of-place color measurably slows a visual task you're focused on (Theeuwes, 1992). In the trainer, color appears only where it is the information: rust means "fix this," and nothing else on screen carries a hue. The limited direct research on typing interfaces points the same way: heavy color-coding can slow you down by adding a "find the color, then read it" step (Zhai et al., 2023, Applied Sciences), and clean immediate feedback matters for catching errors (Snyder, Logan & Yamaguchi, 2015).

Space beats sharpness

Letters get harder to recognize when flanked by clutter, and visual crowding is often a bigger limit than sharpness (Pelli & Tillman, 2008, Nature Neuroscience). So: generous spacing, a centered practice line, no side panels while you type.

One font, always

Your visual system tunes to a font's specific letterforms; breaking that consistency slows letter identification (Sanocki, 1987/1988; Sanocki & Dyson, 2012). Practice text is always the same monospaced face at a stable size. No font pickers.

Nothing moves but the caret

New motion pulls attention automatically (Abrams & Christ, 2003), so while a session is live, the only thing that moves is the caret.

Is Colemak or Dvorak faster than QWERTY?

No reliable evidence shows Dvorak or Colemak types faster than QWERTY. The classic study "The Fable of the Keys" (Liebowitz & Margolis) found no consistent speed advantage. People switch layouts for hand comfort and reduced finger travel, not raw speed, and that's the honest reason to consider one.

How long does it take to learn a new keyboard layout?

Real learner timelines converge on day 1 around 8 WPM, day 30 around 53 WPM, and parity with your old QWERTY speed around day 90 of consistent practice. Most give-up points cluster in the first ten days and around week two, when typing feels slower on both layouts at once.

What is layout emulation?

Layout emulation maps the physical key you press (its KeyboardEvent code) to the character a different layout assigns it, so you can practice Colemak, Dvorak, or AZERTY without changing your operating system's keyboard settings. What is rollover?

Rollover is pressing the next key before releasing the previous one, the physical overlap that lets fast typists keep a steady rhythm instead of stopping between keystrokes. Dhakal et al. Should I focus on speed or accuracy first?

Accuracy first.
